Raccoons
Young raccoons are inquisitive and noisy! They are often reared in uncapped chimneys, attics, and garages. They are dependant on their mother for care for many months after birth and weaning. Please call for advice as raccoons are wonderful, but they do bite and fiercely defend their young, as any parent would. If a nest is disturbed or removed, place the young (while wearing leather gloves) in a cardboard box with paper towel inside near where the nest was. The mother (if alive) WILL come to get them. She WILL go to extremes to retrieve them. Seal up any entrance to the old nesting area after ALL babies are out. If any are left inside, she will destroy whatever in her way to get them back, as any mother would. Watch from a distance to make sure the mother has come to get the young, remembering they are night active! If not, please call a rehabber for help.
