Skunks & Ground Hogs:

Skunks

Young skunks follow their mother, single file everywhere. If a fully furred small skunk is found wandering alone, there is a problem. Please call a rehabber for advice. Young skunks, can and will spray to defend themselves. They will not differentiate a person trying to help them, from one (in their opinion) trying to eat them. They will spray! If a need to protect the animal arises until help can arrive, please place a milk crate over the animal. Make sure all children and domestic animals are kept away from it to protect everyone concerned. If you do get "thanked" for helping, an alternating bath of Listerine and tomato juice will help cut the smell. Also you can safely use hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap (Dawn is the best), but do be careful as peroxide can cause eye damage and will bleach carpets, hair, cloths etc.
