Squirrels & Rabbits:
Squirrels
Young squirrels are dependant upon their parents for more than 12 weeks after birth. If you find one on the ground, alone, with eyes closed; he needs help. Please carefully place him in a box with paper towel lining, and attach the box to a tree near where he was found at a height where he will be protected from roaming cats and dogs. The parents will come and retrieve him within a couple of hours. If she does not, please call a rehabber for advice. Do not leave the young baby outside for the night. If a young squirrel runs up to you, (or even on to you), it is called "squirrel up the pants syndrome". They are orphans still un weaned that are starving and in need of help. Please call the list at the end for help.
Rabbits
Young rabbits are born in shallow nests on the ground, usually smack in the middle of your yard. Dogs, cats and mowers are the primary enemies of baby bunnies.
If you find young fur less rabbits out of the nest, locate the nest and place the young back in it. Cover with fur that was pulled out of the nest and place an X of yarn or small sticks over the nest. If the mother does not return by evening, the X will still be in place. If it is disturbed, she has been back to feed her young. Please leave them be to grown and get out on their own.
The mothers will not be seen sitting on the nest like a chicken. She comes in fast a few times a day, feeds the babies, and leaves. That is why the X is recommended to see if the nest has been visited. If the X is undisturbed the next morning, please call a rehabber for advice and help.
